SBI to hire over 45,000 officers

NEW DELHI: The country's largest lender State Bank of India plans to hire over 5,000 officers, the vast majority of whom would be for its associate banks.

While a total of 4,987 officers would be recruited for associate banks of SBI, as many as 206 officers would be hired for State Bank of India itself.

The associate banks for which recruitment is being done include State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Mysore and State Bank of Travancore.

SBI has started the process of hiring by releasing public advertisements for all these positions.

The bank would be hiring the people for the post of probationary officers for its associate banks, while those in the parent bank would be hired in the position of specialist officers in divisions like law, economics, medical and security.

In the proposed hiring exercise, 1,000 probationary officers would be hired for State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, 1,416 for State Bank of Hyderabad, 1,328 for State Bank of Patiala, 843 for State Bank of Mysore and 400 for State Bank of Travancore.

Last year, SBI had said it plans to hire a total of 27,000 employees -- 20,000 to 22,000 people in clerical posts and 5,500 people at the probationary officer level.

All the PSU banks together, including SBI, are planning to hire about 45,000 personnel during 2011-12 to meet their workforce requirements.

Two wild elephants go berserk in Mysore

MYSORE: Two wild elephants stormed into Mysore early Wednesday, trampling one person to death and causing panic in this cultural city.

"The wild elephants entered the city around 6 a.m. from a nearby forest, wreaked havoc in a suburb trampling one person to death and caused panic in the area," state higher education minster S.A. Ramdas told reporters in Mysore, about 140 km from Bangalore.

After three hours of high voltage drama and mayhem, the twin jumbos were tranquilised by forest guards and chained to trees.

The victim has been identified as Renuka Prasad, a 55-year-old resident of Bamboo Bazar in the old city.

"Prasad was trampled to death by one of the young tuskers near his house when he came out on hearing the commotion in the area. Though he was rushed to a nearby government hospital, he was declared brought dead," Ramdas lamented.

Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa announced Rs.500,000 as compensation to Prasad's kin.

"As a precautionary measure, we have declared holiday for schools and colleges in the city for the day (Wednesday) and deployed additional policemen in the suburbs to prevent any untoward incident," Ramdas said.

While one elephant entered a women's college by crossing over the compound wall and menacingly roamed in the ground, the other jumbo entered into the residential area and the nearby market, attacking Prasad and a cow.

"The forest guards and officials from the Mysore zoo were alerted and they rushed to the spot to control the jumbos by tranquilising them. They will be sent to the nearby forest by the evening," Ramdas pointed out.

According to the state forest department officials, the twin young jumbos came from T. Narsipur forest range, about 35 km from Mysore along with two others, who, however, remained on the outskirts of the city.

"The growing man-animal conflict due to encroachment of forests, decline in forest area due to unregulated expansion of farm lands and increasing movement of people and transport vehicles through the elephant corridor are making the wild jumbos enter villages and towns in search of food and shelter," a forest official said.

Ramdev's health deteriorates; doctors advise him to break fast

HARIDWAR: Yoga guru Baba Ramdev's health has started deteriorating as his fast for tougher anti-graft laws and bringing back black money from foreign nations, entered fifth day here on Wednesday.

Doctors attending to the yoga guru have advised liquid intake and requested him to end his fast soon.

"His health is going down. He has lost weight and is suffering from dehydration. He is not keeping well," chief medical officer, Haridwar Dr Yogesh Sharma said briefing mediapersons about Ramdev's regular check ups.

Sharma said, "We have requested that he should take liquid intake like milk and juices. It will be better if he ends his fast."

The yoga guru, along with hundreds of his disciples, is observing a fast from June 4 at Patanjali Yogapeeth, around 20 kms from here, to press for his demands of bringing back black money from foreign nations, tougher anti-graft laws and to uproot corruption from the country.

Earlier in the day, Ramdev did not show any sign of relentlessness and said that his fast will continue till Centre accepts all his demands.

"My fast is on along with thousands of my followers in each and every part of this country. People in 624 districts are on fast," he said.

He said, "I request children, old age people not to participate in the fast. Others should join this movement like many of their brethren."

Scores of Ramdev supporters are also participating in a day-long sit-in by social activist Anna Hazare demanding a strong anti-corruption Lokpal bill in New Delhi today.

Ramdev's followers continue to pour in from all over the country, raising anti-graft slogans, chanting holy songs and listening to sermons being given by religious leaders at the huge 'yagya shala' inside the Yogapeeth.

"We are with Baba till he ends his fast. There are many others who are also fasting along with him," said Lokesh, who has come from Haldwani near here to participate in the campaign.
